If you're trying to work out the best time to visit Great Park Irvine, "weekday or weekend" turns out to be the wrong question. The park grounds are open every day from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., according to the City of Irvine's Directions and Hours page. The two signature attractions are a different story. The Great Park Balloon and the free Carousel are closed Monday through Wednesday. So the real dividing line falls midweek: Monday to Wednesday on one side, Thursday to Sunday on the other.
Below is a practical breakdown based on the city's published schedules, along with the events that can override all of them.
Quick picks: which day fits your plan
-
Open space, walks, picnics and trails: any day. Monday through Wednesday is the simplest choice because none of the attraction schedules come into play.
-
The balloon and carousel: Thursday through Sunday only. Weekends start an hour earlier.
-
Drop-in sports: any day. Check whether the field you want is reserved, which is more likely on weekends.
-
Art: the free Great Park Gallery is open Thursday through Sunday, with longer hours on weekends.
-
Evenings: the balloon has an evening session from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, and the Visitors Center stays open until 10 p.m. on those days.
The schedule at a glance
These hours come from the City of Irvine's Balloon and Carousel page, its Directions and Hours page and its Great Park Arts page.
| Amenity | Mon-Wed | Thu-Fri | Sat-Sun |
|---|---|---|---|
| Park grounds | 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. | 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. | 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. |
| Great Park Balloon | Closed | 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. | 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. |
| Carousel (free) | Closed | 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. | 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. |
| Visitors Center | 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. | 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. | 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. |
| Great Park Gallery (free) | Closed | Noon to 4 p.m. | 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. |
| Farm + Food Lab | Closed Mon; Tue-Wed 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. | 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. | 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. |
The city notes that individual amenities keep their own hours and that holidays can change them.
Monday through Wednesday: the park without the attractions
Early in the week, the Great Park works as a large public open space more than a destination. The balloon, carousel and gallery are all closed. The grounds, however, keep their full 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. hours, and the Visitors Center is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

That makes Monday through Wednesday a good fit for:
-
Walks and picnics, with no attraction schedule to plan around.
-
Practice sessions. The city's Sports Complex and Facilities page lists drop-in tennis courts daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., five sand volleyball courts daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and four basketball courts open for drop-in play every day. Drop-in field use runs daily from 6 a.m. to dusk on the artificial turf or on fields 5, 6 and 8 through 13 when they aren't reserved.
-
The Farm + Food Lab on Tuesday or Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is closed Mondays.
If a child is expecting a carousel ride, though, don't come on these days.
Thursday and Friday: the weekday sweet spot
For anyone with a flexible schedule, Thursday and Friday are the closest thing the Great Park has to a "weekday" visit with everything running. The balloon flies from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 7 to 10 p.m. The carousel runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the Visitors Center stays open until 10 p.m.
The trade-off is a slightly shorter morning, because attractions open at 10 a.m. instead of 9 a.m. The gallery is also open for less time, from noon to 4 p.m. If you want art and the balloon on the same day, an early afternoon flight followed by the gallery fits inside those windows.
Thursday and Friday make sense for families with young children who aren't in school yet, for visitors passing through Irvine midweek, and for anyone who wants the attractions without full weekend programming.
Saturday and Sunday: the longest hours and the most going on
Weekends give you the most time at the attractions. The balloon and carousel open at 9 a.m., the gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Visitors Center runs from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sports fields open earlier too: the city lists field hours of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, compared with 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays.
Weekends are also when most reserved field use, tournaments and concerts tend to happen. That doesn't mean every weekend is packed, and no official attendance data compares weekdays with weekends. It does mean more of the park's sports fields and parking may be in use on weekends. The local guide Enjoy OC advises visitors to "park near your destination, especially on tournament and event days." Enjoy OC also says general Great Park parking is free, though Wild Rivers, special events and premium parking may charge separately.
Weekends have also brought free arts programming. In January 2026, the city announced Saturday and Sunday activities at the Palm Court, including Jazz in the Palm Court and workshops. Those dates have passed, so look at the city's Great Park Arts page for anything new.
Balloon logistics, whatever day you choose
According to the City of Irvine:

-
Rides cost $10 for adults, and kids ride free (pricing effective Nov. 1, 2024).
-
Payment is cashless only.
-
Rides are first-come, first-served. You can't reserve ahead.
-
The balloon rises 400 feet, and the city says the 360-degree view "spans 40 miles on a clear day."
-
Flights last 10 to 12 minutes.
-
Rides depend on the weather and are "not guaranteed," and hours may vary on holidays.
A planning suggestion: the 7 to 10 p.m. session is a different way to ride, with an evening view instead of a midday one. Because rides depend on the weather, have a backup activity ready, such as the carousel, which runs until 10 p.m. on the same days.
Sports: drop-in versus reserved
The Sports Complex is large. The city lists up to 24 soccer fields, a 2,500-seat Championship Soccer Stadium, 25 tennis courts (including a 132-seat championship court) and 10 baseball and softball fields with two championship stadiums. How much of that is open to you depends on reservations. Lighted fields require reservations, and tournaments and team practices are booked in advance. Drop-in field play is first-come, first-served and only on fields that aren't reserved.
In practice, a reserved field or a tournament changes how that part of the park feels, even when the rest of the grounds are calm. If you want to kick a ball around casually, a Monday through Wednesday visit, or an early weekday morning, gives you the simplest schedule to work with.
Art at the Palm Court
The Great Park Gallery is in the Palm Court Arts Complex at 270 Corsair, and admission is free, according to the city's Great Park Arts page. The current exhibition, "Grrrl Germs: Punk feminism goes viral, 1991-2026," runs through Nov. 29, 2026. The next three solo shows open Jan. 31, 2027, so there's a gap between the two. Plan a gallery visit before late November or after the new year.
The city's Amenities and Attractions page also notes that Great Park Studio and Hangar 244 "are subject to closures due to private event rentals and/or larger city-wide events."
Big events override the calendar
Any day-of-week plan can be undone by a major event. In 2026, the city closed the Carousel, Balloon and Visitors Center from Aug. 24 to Sept. 2 for the Daisy Chain Fields festival, which was founded by Olivia Rodrigo and produced by C3 Presents. The Great Park Gallery stayed closed through Sept. 9. On Saturday, Aug. 29, the entire park closed, including Wild Rivers and Great Park Ice, and nearby roads closed from Aug. 28 to 30.
Two upcoming events to plan around:
-
Rise Against at Great Park Live: Live Nation lists the band's "Ricochet 2026" show on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. If you were thinking of a Friday evening balloon ride that week, expect concert traffic.
-
Dream Glow Festival at Wild Rivers: the official site lists the ticketed light festival nightly from Nov. 5 to Dec. 30, 2026, from 5 p.m. to 9 or 9:30 p.m. (hours vary on holidays), at Wild Rivers, 10000 Great Park Blvd. Tickets are $37 for adults and $25 for children (under 3 free), and premium tickets are $53 for adults and $41 for children. The site doesn't show different prices for weekdays and weekends.
Two common assumptions that are out of date
The Sunday farmers market isn't at the Great Park anymore. The Certified Farmers Market, formerly the Great Park Farmers Market, moved to Stonegate Elementary at 100 Honors on Nov. 10, 2024, according to the City of Irvine. It still runs Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., just not at the park.
The Canopy isn't open yet. The official Canopy at Great Park site says "Coming late 2026!" and lists no open tenants or hours. Don't plan a meal there for now.
Getting there
The Great Park is at 8000 Great Park Blvd. in Irvine. The city's directions say to exit Sand Canyon Avenue from I-5 or I-405, turn onto Great Park Boulevard and follow the signs to parking.
The bottom line
Pick the day based on what you want to do. For quiet open space and drop-in play, Monday through Wednesday works well. For the balloon and carousel with a lighter schedule, choose Thursday or Friday. For the longest attraction hours and the most activity, go Saturday or Sunday. Whatever day you pick, remember that holidays, weather and large events can change balloon and carousel hours, and the city posts closures on its Great Park pages.
