To reserve a picnic shelter at an Irvine park, pick one of eight City of Irvine community parks with reservable shelters. Then send the city's online Public Facility Reservation Application & Request at least 30 days before your event. Groups of 50 or more must reserve. City staff reply within 10 business days.
If you searched "reserve picnic shelter Irvine park" and landed here, this guide covers public City of Irvine parks, not private HOA facilities. Everything below comes from the city's own Facility Reservations pages, which are run by Community Services. Check those pages again before you book, since policies and fee lists can change.
Do you need a reservation?
It depends on group size and on where you want to set up. The city's Picnic & Bounce Houses page sets out the rules:
-
50 or more people: you must reserve a shelter at one of the eight community parks listed below.
-
Fewer than 50 people: you can use community-park shelters without a reservation.
-
Shelters at every other park, neighborhood parks included: first-come, first-served only, with no reservations. They're limited to groups of 49 or fewer, and alcohol and vendors such as caterers or entertainers aren't allowed.
In short, a big group, a caterer, an entertainer or alcohol means you'll be booking a community-park shelter. A small, simple picnic can usually just show up.
Where you can reserve a picnic shelter in Irvine
The city lists reservable picnic shelters at these eight community parks:

-
Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park
-
Deerfield Community Park
-
Heritage Community Park
-
Las Lomas Community Park
-
Mike Ward Community Park (Woodbridge)
-
Northwood Community Park
-
Turtle Rock Community Park
-
Woodbury Community Park
Some of the city's park facility pages give more detail on individual shelters:
Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park
According to the park's facility page, Shelters #1-#4 can be reserved. Each has long and short tables and a barbecue and holds up to 75 people per shelter area. Groups larger than 75 need to book more than one shelter. Shelters #5 and #6 are first-come, first-served for groups of 49 or fewer.
Heritage Community Park
Heritage, at 14301 Yale Ave. (Walnut and Yale), has one shelter near the lake with 20 tables. The whole shelter holds up to 200 attendees. The Heritage facility page says every outdoor rental there must buy insurance because the site is next to the lake. Groups of 49 or fewer can drop in.
Mike Ward Community Park (Woodbridge)
The Mike Ward facility page lists one reservable shelter with four tables and two barbecues, for up to 75 attendees.
Northwood Community Park
Northwood, at 4531 Bryan Ave., has two shelters. Each has six tables and two barbecues and holds a maximum of 75 people. The Northwood Community Center page says one shelter stays first-come, first-served for groups of 49 or fewer. Large groups, and groups bringing vendor services such as bounce houses or catering, must reserve.
Turtle Rock Community Park
The Turtle Rock shelter, at 1 Sunnyhill (at Shady Canyon Drive), has 22 stainless steel picnic tables and six barbecues. It holds a maximum of 200 people with seating for 150. The Turtle Rock Community Center page gives these reservable hours:
-
Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
-
Saturday: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
-
Sunday: noon to 6 p.m.
Extra hours can be arranged on request, and holiday hours may differ.
Deerfield, Las Lomas and Woodbury are on the city's reservable list. Check their individual facility pages or the city's Rentable Facilities List for shelter capacity and amenities.
How to book: step by step
Step 1: Pick a park and shelter
Start with the Rentable Facilities List, linked from the Facility Reservations page, and the park facility pages above. Compare capacity, table counts and barbecues against your guest list. If you expect more than 75 people, Heritage, Turtle Rock or several Bill Barber shelters are the options with published capacity big enough for you.
Step 2: Plan at least 30 days ahead
The city asks for reservation requests at least 30 days before the event. This appears on both the Picnic & Bounce Houses page and the Facility Reservations FAQ. When choosing a date, remember that city facilities close on major holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Step 3: Submit the application
Fill out the online Public Facility Reservation Application & Request. It's hosted on SeamlessDocs and linked from the city's Applications page. You can also contact Facility Reservations directly:
-
Phone: 949-724-6620
-
Office hours: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday
-
Mail: 1 Civic Center Plaza, Irvine, CA 92606-5207
Step 4: Wait for staff review
The Applications page says staff review each request, check availability and respond within 10 business days. Applying early leaves time to choose another date or shelter if your first pick is taken.
Step 5: Sort out fees, insurance and add-ons
Bounce houses: reservation plus permit
Bounce houses follow their own rules, set out on the city's Picnic & Bounce Houses page. At community parks you need both a picnic shelter reservation and a permit. At the thirteen neighborhood parks that allow them, you only need a permit, and the group must be under 50.

-
Operators need an Irvine business license, liability insurance, workers' compensation insurance and a generator.
-
City electrical outlets can't be used.
-
Private-party equipment is prohibited at all parks, so the unit must come from a vendor.
-
Units must be supervised at all times.
The city's pre-approved bounce house vendors through Dec. 31, 2026, are Jump N Bounce, Party House Jumpers, Cal Jump, Groove Jumpers, Magic Jump Rentals and Jump Action. For a party in 2027, check the page for the current list before you book a vendor.
What a reservation gets you
According to the city's FAQ, an outdoor reservation includes exclusive use of the reserved area, shared use of nearby restrooms and limited staff support. It doesn't include food, supplies, equipment or linens, so bring your own tablecloths, serving gear and anything else you need.
Changes and cancellations
Send any cancellation or change in writing to reservations@cityofirvine.org. The city says fees may apply.
Sidebar: what about the Great Park?
Site rentals at Great Park, such as large events, film shoots and corporate gatherings, use a separate Site Rental Application. The city asks for 7 business days for those requests. The Great Park Site Rentals page sends people looking for picnic shelters to the citywide Facility Reservations page, so the steps above are the place to start for a picnic.
